Hand in hand with wholesale species extinction, in film over the last 25 years the audience for works that engage our intelligence and enlarge our souls has been deprived of its natural habitat: films made by filmmakers inspired by and extending that tradition. It can only be built up again by filmmakers who act as if it still exists. The audience inside us must stand for the one out there that must await evolution, fed by the right films and skillful enlightened distribution, to exist once again.
